Yule Ramblings #6: The Lyrical One

Are you ready for this melodic memory?

These black beauties are from the time when Colby and I were feeling tunefully inspired.
You will find on our tree around 20 matte plastic nonbreakable charcoal-colored Christmas balls, each with a song lyric excerpt inscribed in multi-purpose silver gel pen.
We scribbled down lyrics from some of our very favorite mainstream musical minds. And here's what was particularly fun about this activity: Colby and I decided that each song should be dedicated to one another, and that we wouldn't reveal our selected lyrics until after we each finished penning our assigned balls. Now we put quite a bit of effort into this. But it was totally worth it. As we started serenading each other (more like squawking at each other) and sharing the backstories behind our choices, well, our quaint apartment living room was replete with lightness and laughter.
So, from the cloyingly schmaltzy forever-embedded-in-your-head love songs to the profoundly poetic alt-90's rock radio, here, for your pleasure, is a small selection from the set list we dedicated to one another:
"Everlong", Foo Fighters
"Reckless Abandon", Blink 182
"Freewill," Rush
"Amsterdam," Guster
"Drive," (Colby hears Deftones, I hear The Cars)
"Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," the '93 Rod Stewart's version
"Misty Mountain Hop," Led Zeppelin
"Where Is My Mind?", Pixies
"(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To", Weezer
"Songbird," Oasis
"Stellar," Incubus
"Scarlet Begonias," Grateful Dead
There are more. But I think you get the point. I remember that my sister-in-law (to be, at the time) Kelsie visited us shortly after and read many of these ornaments out loud. Her assessment: "You guys are such nerds." Righto. Were then. Still are. ;)
